Video clapboard 1

I am what I learn.

The U.S. Department of
Education is hosting a video contest for students. The contest is open
to students 13 and over who make a short video (no more than 2 minutes)
about the importance of education. It looks like an interesting
assignment for kids.

Clarkdale Elementary School Relief Efforts

Posted in General on 23.09.09

Clarkdale Elementary School was submerged in the recent flooding. Clarkdale students and their teachers will be sent to two different schools where they will remain until Cobb County decides what to do about the damaged building. If you would like to help these students, their families, and the teachers of Clarkdale, please see the attached file. Sadly, many Clarkdale students must endure the pain of losing their house and their school. They need our help. Thanks!

Your Rain Vacation Continues

Posted in General on 22.09.09

Make sure you finish In Cold Blood by Thursday. I still have a story to tell you!

The speeches that were scheduled for Tuesday (11 & 12) and the speeches
that were scheduled for Wednesday (13 & 14) will now move to Thursday. We
will complete speeches 15 and 16 on Monday.

The In Cold Blood test will still take place on Friday, and
I’ll tell you more about it on Thursday. You will need to know all character names as well as why the characters are important. I have sent a message on Facebook (may take hours for Facebook to send it) suggesting that students get together to share names to help review for the test. Feel free to start a Facebook group so you can work together. You may even post the Facebook group URL on the AP English Language group gall if you so desire.

Enjoy your day off and take care!

2009 Flu Prevention PSA Contest

Posted in General on 22.09.09

via www.flu.gov

The Health and Human Services Department recently held a contest to select the best Public Service Announcement to educate the public about good hygiene and flu prevention. Take a look at the nominated videos and the winner. If I had known about this contest when we worked on PSAs a few weeks ago, we could really have had fun with this topic!

Rain Day!

Posted in General on 21.09.09

Raining cats and dog

Raise your hand and cheer if you are DELIGHTED that school
will be closed tomorrow! In my 32 years of teaching, tomorrow will be the first
day I have ever missed because of RAIN!

I entered timed writing grades for first period in Pinnacle
before I left school today. Sorry, second and third periods. I’m still grading
your papers and cannot list the grades in Pinnacle when I finish because
teachers are shut out of Pinnacle until Mrs. Garner captures grades for report
cards.  (We will have homeroom on Friday
to get report cards.)

Please stick to the reading schedule on your syllabus. You
should finish the ICB by Wednesday, and boy do I have a story to tell you then!

The speeches that were scheduled for Tuesday (11 & 12)
will now move to Wednesday.  The speeches
that were scheduled for Wednesday (13 & 14) will now move to Thursday. We
will also complete speeches 15 and 16 on Thursday as scheduled. (Please notice
that Thursday had “TBA” – To Be Announced) next to it.  See, I knew we would be building arks this
week! Don’t email me and ask me what number you are; the list is on my desk at
school.

The In Cold Blood test will still take place on Friday, and
I’ll tell you more about it on Wednesday and Thursday.

Please share this message with anyone you know who is not in
this Facebook group. I’ll post the same message on the AP English website. That’s
all I know to do.

Enjoy your day off!

Going outside and playing in the rain is just not the same as playing in
the snow.  . . but we’ll take it!

Gladly Would I Teach

Posted in General on 18.09.09

Glady Would I Teach

Since I am nearing the end of my long teaching career, I have decided to start a blog and share some of my teaching stories and tips for younger teachers. The blog is written primarily for teachers, but students are welcomed to read any entries they may find interesting. The photo above is from 1977, my first year of teaching. These precious thirteen-year-old girls are now in their forties. I told you I am old!

Are You Nervous About Giving a Speech?

Posted in General on 09.09.09

Twain speech Over the past week, several students have mentioned that they are nervous about giving a speech in front of the class. Believe it or not, speaking in front of an audience is one of the most common fears we all have. In fact, one of the reasons I make students deliver a short speech early in the semester is so they will be more relaxed when they have to participate in more challenging assignments in front of the class later in the semester. One of the most important things you should remember is that you will be giving your speech in front of your classmates, and WE ALL WANT YOU TO DO WELL!  No one is going to make fun of you or hope that you make mistakes. We all support each other!

If you want specific strategies to help you deal with your stress, please read the following suggestions.

Public Service Announcement

Posted in General on 07.09.09

Create a Public Service Announcement that might appear
in a magazine or a television commercial. The
advertisement / commercial must exhibit ethos, pathos, and/or logos.  Videos should be no longer that one minute.

Examples:

Print
Download Coogan and Knight

PowerPoint
Download Bullying

Videos
Download Texting and driving-1

Download No Child Left Behind

Download Gorilla PSA
