Welcome Class of 2010!

Posted in General on 30.05.09

Welcome to AP English Language!

Feel free during the summer to peruse this website in order to see
what you will do in class next year. Under the "Pages" listed on the
left, you will find a link to your Summer Reading. You might want to take a look at this soon.

If you need to contact me during the summer, please email me through
the link on this page or you can reach me through Facebook. (I think I
am currently the oldest Facebook member on the planet!) I have set up a
Facebook Group for new AP English Language students. If you want to
join, the link is located under "Links" on the left panel of this page.
You may join this group regardless of whether you will take the course
first or second semester.

In a couple of weeks after everyone has had a chance to relax, I
will post more information about things you might want to do over the
summer to prepare for the grueling college admissions process. For now,
I'll  simply recommend two things:

  • One of the essays that you will write in AP English Language is an
autobiography. (See link under "Pages.") This is an essay that you
should be able to modify and use for many colleges that require
applicants to submit essays. If you write it now when you have more
time and less stress, you will probably write a better essay, and you
will thank yourself in the fall. Yes, I will even read the essay, make
suggestions, grade it, and even count it for your class assignment if
you e-mail it to me this summer.
  • "This I Believe" (See link under "Pages.") is also an essay that
you will write in AP English Language that will help you with college
essays in the fall. Feel free to write it over the summer and e-mail it
    to me.

I look forward to meeting you and teaching you in the fall.
Have a great summer!

Take Care!

Congratulations, Class of 2009

Posted in General on 30.05.09

I have had a rewarding, entertaining, and very easy year simply because you have been such a positive and motivated group of students. I hate to see you leave, but I am proud of you! On this message I wanted to post a photo of you throwing your hats at graduation, but I haven't found one yet. Didn't anyone get a decent hat-throwing photo in the rain?!!

As soon as I receive information about this year's scores, I'll send out a message through Facebook. If you would like to keep in touch, please join the Facebook group for former AP English Language students:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=19941658407
Later tonight, I will update this blog to welcome the Class of 2009 and include information they need to know for the course.

I have been honored to teach all of you this year, and I wish you the best of luck next year in college. If you don't stay in touch, I'll hunt you down!

We miss you, Seniors!

Posted in General on 20.05.09

You have only been gone one day, and we already miss you. Our remaining juniors didn't have much to do today. Megan did homework in first period. Trae and Zack sat in their assigned seats in the empty classroom and then ate the cookie cake that third period gave them. We later took a field trip to the school store to go bargain shopping as seniors stood in a very long line to get extra graduation tickets. Tomorrow should be even more fun!

New Debate Rubric for Debates by Pairs

Posted in General on 03.05.09

Because most of you will work with a partner and debate 2 students, I had to create a new debate rubric. Here is the rubric I will use to grade your debates this week.
