College Application Help – Sept. 4th

Posted in General on 25.08.08

Because of the extensive college application process, fall is a busy time for all seniors.  On Thursday, September 4th, Mrs. Young, Guidance Counselor, will visit the AP English Language classes in order to go through the college application process.

If you are taking AP English Language second semester, I would like you to attend one of the sessions on this day. Mrs. Young will be in my room (#318) first through third periods. She will be with Mr. Widness during 4th period. If you would like to attend, ask your teacher if it is okay for you to miss class on that day. Then sign the sheet outside my classroom so I will know when you are coming.

Please spread the word to students taking the course second semester.

If you have any questions, please send me an email or Facebook message.

First Precis Due Wednesday

Posted in General on 18.08.08

Classroom_1_001 You will submit your first precis on Wednesday when we discuss "On Dumpster Diving" from The Norton Reader, the greatest textbook in the history of the modern world. You should have one printed copy of the assignment to give me in class, and you must also submit the paper to Turnitin.com before class begins. See the website and class handouts for more information. To expedite completion of this assignment, you may want to download the precis template below. Before you save it to your computer, however, please change "Name" to your name!

Unlike other papers that you will submit during the semester, this assignment should always be single-spaced.

Please understand that you must give me a copy of your paper at the beginning of class each day. If you do not have the paper because it is handwritten or because your printer wasn’t working, etc., please use one of your free passes that you received the first day of class. If you use a free pass, however, you are still required to read the essay and participate in the class discussion.

Don’t forget to submit the assignment for the second summer reading book to Turnitin.com by midnight tonight!

Make sure you review character names and plot from your summer reading book and be prepared for your test on Monday.

Your initial entry for the blog must be posted in Much Madness or Typepad by noon on Sunday. The new topic for next week will be posted at noon on Sunday. If you want to participate in the blog during the semester, you must respond to at least 8 topics during the semester. When you receive credit for 8 weeks, you will not have to write the character sketch.

Thanks for making this an easy and fun opening week of school!

The Class of 2009 is WONDERFUL!

College-Preparation Week

Posted in General on 12.08.08

To help seniors who take multiple AP courses and who participate in many extra-curricular activities, for the past three years, many teachers have agreed to give seniors a week of no (or limited) homework / tests/ projects/ papers. This "free" week gives students the opportunity to spend an entire week on college applications and essays. Past KMHS students have been extremely appreciative of this opportunity.

This year KMHS College-Prep Week will be held on October 6th – 10th.

TEACHER PARTICIPATION IN COLLEGE-PREPARATION WEEK IS VOLUNTARY! If your teacher participates, thank him or her. If your teacher does not participate, please understand that some teachers are simply afraid that they will not be able to complete their curriculum by the end of the semester if they participate.

AP English Language will participate in College-Prep Week. Please plan to use this extra time to work on college admissions assignments.

Parents – Info about Course

Posted in General on 10.08.08

Because Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition is often the first AP course that many students take, parents often want more information about the course, the grading, and the assignments that their children will experience during the semester.   I maintain a separate site for parents and will update it each week during the semester. Please email me if you have items you would like me to address in the blog. Thanks!

I am looking forward to teaching your children this year!

Welcome & First Night’s Homework

Posted in General on 10.08.08

Welcome to AP English Language & Composition

I am looking forward to meeting all of you!  I hope you will enjoy the course as you also improve your reading and writing skills throughout the semester. While AP English requires a great deal of work, after you have completed the course, you will be well prepared for the AP exam in May as well as for college English. In fact, 83% of the 118 students who took the AP English Language exam last year made a 3 or higher on the AP exam. For many colleges this score is high enough to exempt the first college English class!

The First Night’s Homework Assignment is listed below.

What a Surprise!

When I opened my classroom door on Friday, I expected to spend the  rest of my afternoon preparing for the new school year.

Instead, I was greeted by former students who gave me a lifetime memory! I was shocked and so excited and thankful that I simply didn’t know what to say (a rare experience for me)!

People who say teachers are paid very little simply do not realize that the best "pay" for teachers is not measured in dollars but in the relationships they develop with students and in those wonderful moments they spend with special students. The little brown book of letters that you wrote to me means much more to me than the salary increase I will receive because of my degree. I will treasure that little book and your well wishes for the rest of my life.

I am blessed to have taught you all!  Thank you for taking the time to make this day one of the greatest days of my life!
